A common sight that had the crowd going crazy was not just athletes winning medals, but also the many marriage proposals that happened during the Games this year.

Rio Olympics 2016 has been spectacular so far, what with the vigour and enthusiasm with which athletes have been participating. Amid spectacular sporting news – Michael Phelps breaking records that have been around for more than 2,000 years, Simone Biles’ amazing dexterity, Sakshi Malik’s bronze medal for India – this year’s Olympics is fast earning itself the reputation of the event of choice for proposals in the sporting fraternity.

Not only are these athletes working winning medals, but they’re doing a pretty good job at winning hearts as well! So far, there have been as many as five Olympic proposals already – and with a couple of days yet for the event to finish, who knows how many others will get down on one knee.

Take for instance, Brazilian rugby player Isadora Cerullo, was in for a surprise when her partner of two years, Marjorie Enya proposed to her on the field! If that was not epic in itself, Enya, who is also a manager at the Games venue, grabbed a microphone and gave an emotional speech, while the crowd burst into cheers. No, we are not crying, guys. It’s just the onions.

Then there was the second-second proposal. Following Britain’s Charlotte Dujardin high-scoring freestyle dressage test, cameras focused on her long-time partner in the stands holding up a sign saying ,”Will you marry me now?” Dujarin, who won her second straight Olympic individual gold in the sport on Monday, said she already had a ring on her finger and planned to marry her fiancé Dean Wyatt next year.

China’s He Zi who had just received her silver medal for the 3m springboard diving event, had her boyfriend of six years, Qin Kai, going down on one knee and proposing her right after. A 25-year-old Zi looked a little shocked but managed to show a thumbs up to the cameras, indicating that it was a yes to the fellow driver’s proposal! The crowd, of course, went berserk with joy for the couple!

Though British race walker Tom Bosworth came in sixth in the 20km walking event last week, he definitely comes first for Harry Dineley, his boyfriend-turned-fiancé. Bosworth proposed to Dineley on Copacabana Beach in Rio. Dineley tweeted a picture of the engagement ring with the caption “Ok then”.

William Claye of team America, fresh from winning silver in the men’s triple jump, proposed to fellow American athlete and hurdler Queen Harrison. Harrison, who hadn’t qualified for the Games, had come to support and cheer the USA team and her boyfriend. The crowd was only happy to see the love-birds going official.

This is not the first time that marriage proposals have been centred around the Olympics. The 2012 London Olympics torch relay saw one of the runners propose to his eight-months pregnant girlfriend. Well, medals or no medals, not only have they won our hearts, but they’ve got some pretty great engagement stories for the world to remember as well.
